(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, September 20, 2012 ) Orchard Park, NY – The Buffalo Bills has agreed to extend its lease agreement with Ralph Wilson Stadium, which will therefore remain as the Bills’ home for at least another year. The short-term deal with Erie County will accommodate all of the Bills’ 2013 home games.
While a new lease agreement has not been finalized, the short-term extension will at least lighten the pressure on both sides as they continue to negotiate their way through a new one.
County executive Mark Poloncarz was quoted as saying: “Nobody wants to have a gun at their heads thinking if we don’t get it done by the end of the season then what’s going to happen? By doing an extension, it guarantees the Bills are here for the full 2013 season, and it gives us ample time during the next 18 months or so to continue these negotiations.”
The one-year lease extension, however, is a positive sign that all will work out for the Buffalo Bills and their longtime home. The Bills have occupied the Ralph Wilson Stadium, then known as the Rich Stadium, since 1973, just one year after the stadium opened. In fact, the stadium was renamed in 1998 after Bills owner Ralph Wilson.
The only problem that’s causing a delay in the negotiations is a discussion about renovations, which could cost anywhere between $200 and $220 million. The renovations would be jointly shouldered by the county and the franchise, but details are yet to be finalized. Earlier reports say that the negotiations have stalled over the last few months, which is why a new lease agreement is still not ready up until now.
It is undeniable, however, that the 39-year-old stadium is in need of a major overhaul. According to National Football Post’s Joe Fortenbaugh, the Ralph Wilson Stadium ‘is going to rank at the bottom of the list’ in terms of architecture and amenities when all 31 NFL stadiums are compared.
The Buffalo Bills, however, also have to consider other factors that may change the direction of the team in the future. Ralph Wilson, current owner of the Bills, is now 93 years old and has spent the past week in the hospital. Wilson has earlier expressed his intention of having his heirs sell the franchise, which means that a new owner might eventually relocate the franchise.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills continue their home games as scheduled in their well-known home. On September 30, they will host the New England Patriots, and on October 21, the Tennessee Titans. They will also play home games against the Miami Dolphins, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the St. Louis Rams, and the New York Jets before the end of the year.
