(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, September 20, 2012 ) New York, NY – The New York Knicks has begun a ‘pre-training camp’ at the start of September to prepare themselves for the 2012-2013 NBA season. The news was revealed by Knicks star Steve Novak himself, who said: “We just want to make sure we hit the ground running.”
According to Novak, the pre-training camp will include general basketball training as well as conditioning skills.
The said camp takes place at the team’s Greenburgh training facility and will reportedly continue until October 1, when the Knicks is scheduled to report for media day.
The Knicks’ early training became newsworthy when Travis King, training adviser for Amare Stoudemire, said that it was ‘unique’ for players to band together as a team this early during the offseason.
The early camp was said to have been the idea of coach Mike Woodson, but the schedule was decided by the team’s veterans including Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler, and Carmelo Anthony. Novak said that the coach’s desire to hold training earlier is a testament of Woodson’s dedication to the Knicks.
“The way he’s gone out of the way this summer to make sure he stays in touch with everybody and visits guys, that goes a long way,” Novak said. “I think to build a winning culture, you have a do a little bit more, and that makes you a better team in the NBA. And I feel like knowing that your coach cares about you and he’s thinking about you during the summer, and he has plans for you, that goes a long way.”
Part of what encouraged the three veterans to begin training early is the fact that they have never been together from the start of the season. According to King, Amare was in the team in 2010, while Melo came in last year, when the lockout did not allow the team to have a formal training camp.
“I think coach Woodson knows that it’s important getting those guys to jell together and knows that they can have a championship-caliber team,” said King.
King also highlighted the fact that the Knicks have to establish a connection between its veteran players and its new point guards. These include some of the Knicks’ admirable acquisitions during the offseason, such as Raymond Felton, Kurt Thomas, and Jason Kidd.
The Knicks also acquired fresh and young talents that will need further honing such as guards Chris Smith, Pablo Prigioni, and Chris Copeland.
The combination of all these players make the Knicks ‘one of the deepest teams in the NBA’, but coach Woodson is aware that the key to reaching the team’s highest potential is to get its best player to work together and ‘get everybody on the same page’, adds King.
The New York Knicks is obviously taking the upcoming season seriously. Fans won’t have to wait long to see whether the pre-training camp will make a major difference to their play as the Knicks will play their first preseason game on October 11 at the Verizon Center in Washington DC. This will be followed by four other preseason games before the team plays its first official game for the season on November 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where they will be hosted by the Brooklyn Nets.
