(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, September 13, 2012 ) New York, NY – The New York Rangers expressed hope that a new collective bargaining agreement would be reached in time for the start of the 2012-2013 NHL season scheduled next month on the 11th of October.
With the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA about to expire and no new agreement in place until now, folks within the league has shown little optimism that the upcoming season’s official October 11 start would push through. This means the possibility of a lockout is very strong.
Just last Friday, September 7, both sides returned to the negotiations table but no new agreement has been reached.
The league and the union have been negotiating for a span of eight weeks, even before the previous agreement expired. However, the two sides still have several issues to straighten out, mostly with regards to economic issues.
Commissioner Gary Bettman has stated that he intends to lock the players out if they do not reach a deal by September 15.
In an interview with ESPN during the team’s first annual charity dog walk at Riverside Park, Rangers owner James Dolan said: “The only thing I can say is that I want us to play hockey.”
Rangers general manager keep the team’s hopes up by saying: “I’m always optimistic.”
His optimism is echoed by Rangers alternate captain Brad Richards, who thinks there is still adequate time to reach an agreement. The 32-year-old Hockey center said: “We just want to play. We just want to get it figured out.”
Since Richards had witnessed a previous lockout back in the 2004-2005 season, he is quite optimistic about the 2012-2013 season, saying: “From my experience last time (there was a lockout), no one even talked at this point.”
“There’s a lot of meetings, a lot more than last time,” he compared. “So, I think both sides know there’s some urgency.”
Prior to the 2004-2005 season, Richards had just brought the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup and brought home for himself the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. During the lockout, Richards chose to play in Russia. This year, however, with prospects of another lockout threatening the upcoming season, Richards has said he has not thought about whether he would play overseas again.
Fans are left wondering, however, whether the team would be back in training as planned despite no clear plans of a new season. Coach John Tortorella confirmed, however, that the Rangers will proceed with its training camp as planned.
“The New York Rangers camp is ready to go on the 21st. We’re chomping on the bit to get going here. If they say no, we’ll wait ‘til they say yes.”
With the Rangers determined to go back to training, ticket sales are still on as usual. All New York Rangers tickets for the upcoming season are still open for reservations at ACheapSeat.com.
