(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, August 22, 2012 ) Brooklyn, NY -- Tickets to see the Harlem Globetrotters in their 2012 show are selling fast and are expected to sell out soon. The exhibition basketball team, famed for their athleticism, theatrics, and comedy, is set to perform at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on the 7th of October. The show will begin at 5:00 PM and will see the amazingly skilled basketball team in yet another breathtaking exhibition game.
The 2012 exhibition game will be another addition to the team’s long list of over 20,000 games in 118 countries. The team only conducts performances yearly, so their fans really come out to see the games and to hear the iconic whistled version of Brother Bones’ Sweet Georgia Brown, the team’s signature song. They also come out to see Globie, the team’s mascot since 1993.
The Harlem Globetrotters, which was founded by Abe Saperstein in 1927 in Chicago, started out as a serious competitive basketball team. Once they have a safe lead in their games, they will begin clowning for the audience. Eventually, they were invited to participate in the World Professional Basketball Tournament where they went head to head with the New York Rens in the semi-finals. The match saw the first mashup between the two greatest all-black professional basketball teams in history.
Ultimately, the Globetrotters, as they were initially known, became famous for their extracurricular performances, and they inevitably began holding separate performances just to showcase their unique skills. The team then adopted the name ‘Harlem’ to reflect the team’s African-American roots.
The Harlem Globetrotters has garnered major popularity over the years. Aside from their exhibition games, they have been featured in various films and television series. In 1951, they appeared in a feature film called The Harlem Globetrotters. This was followed by a sequel called Go, Man, Go! in 1954. A Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoon based on the team was also broadcast from 1970 to 1973. The cartoon Globetrotters also had a guest appearance on The New Scooby Doo Movies. Another Hanna-Barbera cartoon called The Super Globetrotters was also aired in 1979; it already featured new Globetrotters. These are just some of the pop culture appearances of the amazing exhibition team.
