(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, June 18, 2013 ) Brooklyn, NY -- Pioneer Girls Troop 17 Feeds ‘100 Dips' to Hundreds
Brooklyn, NY (June 14, 2013) – Last night, the First Methodist Church's event room was packed by more than 200 people who came to taste samples at Pioneer Girls Troop 17's "100 Dips" cooking event.
According to Troop Mistress Jeannine LaJoya, "100 Dips" was the first in what she hopes will be an annual event.
"All the girls were excited about earning their cooking pins," said LaJoya. "But they also said that traditional recipes didn't seem practical. ‘Who has time to cook? Not my mom and dad!' they said. After discussion, though, they thought many people would be excited by easy, healthy dips for parties, light dinners and snacks. So, the girls went to work and found hundreds of recipes on the Internet – even made a few new ones."
Troop 17 designed the event to both earn their cooking pins and raise money for troop programs. At the door, a $5 donation was suggested to guests, and LaJoya said that more than $500 was raised.
"Help from the community really helped the girls raise more money," said LaJoya. "Henderson's Grocery donated all the food for the dips, snacks and drinks, as well as plastic plates, cups and napkins. The colorful Silicone Spoon Rests were donated by Kitchen Meister."
All dips were artfully served in red, yellow, green or orange spoon rests, which look like large spoons. Local silicone manufacturer Kitchen Meister manufactures and sells the silicone spoon rests.
"The most usual use for our silicone spoon rests is, well, resting dirty kitchen spoons, ladles, etc., so they don't dirty your stovetop or counter" said Kitchen Meister Sales Representative Peggy Holden. "But what the girls did is one of the dozens of other uses our customers have found for them. I use them at my own parties for serving out small snacks, like mints and Chex Mix."
Many of the dips the Pioneer Girls served were hot from the crock pot.
"That's OK," said Holden. "Silicone isn't plastic. It's heat resistant up to 500 degrees (Fahrenheit) and easy to clean."
At the end of the night, LaJoya and Lead Pioneer Girl Tracy Kantzopolis thanked everyone who came and the companies who donated.
"Thanks to Henderson's for all the food and dishes" said Kantzopolis. "And thanks to Kitchen Meister and Ms. Holden. The colorful Silicone Spoon Rests really set off the dips beautifully. And thank you to all of you for being here, enjoying our cooking, and your donations.
