(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, June 14, 2013 ) Brooklyn, NY -- Local Chef Begins Kitchen Gear Demonstration Series With Silicone Pot Holder, Trivet, and Garlic Peeler
Brooklyn, NY (June 7, 2013) – Today, John Freeborn, noted Brooklyn chef and owner of Café des Délices, featured silicone trivets in the first in his latest series of cooking demonstrations, "Maximizing Kitchen Gear."
"I don't think anyone has done a cooking series like this," said Freeborn. "Normally, cooking classes focus on particular cuisines, events or ingredients. But I wanted to focus on using everyday kitchen items to their full potential. Too many people think they can't cook until they buy a lot of gear. That's not true! I cooked my first Chicken Francaise in our tiny apartment kitchen with a cheap paring knife, an old frying pan, and regular utensils and dishes."
During today's "Maximizing Kitchen Gear" session, Freeborn cooked a five-course French meal while demonstrated dozens of uses for silicone trivets, which are essentially flat, flexible pot holders. He used the trivets as pot holders, pads to place hot pans on the counter, opening an olive jar, laying down dirty spoons, easily peeling garlic – even replacing a hot light bulb that went out during the demonstration.
"I think everyone should have these trivets in their kitchen," said Freeborn. "They're cheap, non-slip, effective and protect your hands and furniture up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit."
Attendee Janet Xu, who traveled from Florida to see Freeborn's demonstration, was impressed by his many uses for the silicone trivets.
"It was pretty amazing!" said Xu. "I never would have thought of half that stuff. I really dug the way he peeled the garlic. I'm tired of using a paring knife and getting my hands all stinky. I was also impressed by how easy crusted food washed off the silicone trivets during cleanup at the end. I hate washing dishes!"
The silicone trivets for the class were provided by local manufacture Kitchen Meister, and all attendees received two free trivets in the bright colors of their choice. The Silicone Pot Holder, trivet, and Garlic Peeler normally retail for less than $5 each, said Kitchen Meister Sales Representative Peggy Holden.
"We think it's great that John is having these cooking classes," said Holden. "We believe in his concept. It's what Kitchen Meister is dedicated to – high-quality, silicone kitchen accessories that are inexpensive and serve multiple uses, and they are guaranteed to last a lifetime. … Also, it's a personal pleasure for me to be here because I love John's cooking. What a lunch! I must have gained five pounds!"
The next in the eight-part "Maximizing Kitchen Gear" series is Friday, June 21, and will focus on using ordinary table forks.
