(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, March 07, 2013 ) Buffalo, NY -- The Hanford Nuclear Reservation of Washington State is considered the most contaminated nuclear site in the United States. The federal government has struggled to clean up the site for decades, but now there are reported leaks in the underground holding facilities. Time appears to be the enemy.
The bomb that brought the end to the second World War was created with plutonium that was created at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Southeastern Washington State. In the subsequent years, Hanford grew into the nation's nuclear dumping ground, and a final resting place for large amounts of radioactive sludge. Over 56 million gallons are now encased in 177 underground storage tanks in the area.
Tom Carpenter, who is executive director of environmental organization for Hanford Challenge stated "A third of these tanks have failed already. One third! They've leaked a million gallons, there's more to come."
Last week, the governor of Washington confirmed that six of the tanks are actively leaking. Governor Jay Inslee stated, "Washington State has a zero-tolerance policy on radioactive leaks." The federal government has already put in its money into cleaning up the area, spending billions over the decades to handle various troubles I the past.
Carpenter stated, "They lost their integrity, essentially, their engineered design life, right around the time that we sent a man to the moon in the 1960s."
And while Inslee stated the current leaks do not pose immediate risk to the public, the cleanup at Hanford continues. It is estimated it will take well over 40 years to handle, with a cost of over $100 billion.
According to Michio Kaku, who is a professor of physics in the City University of New York: "At the time of sequester, taxpayers spend $2 billion per year just maintaining the cleanup operation. Then it was revealed that hundreds of gallons of high-level toxic waste have been leaking over the last several years right into the ground. Eventually into the groundwater and maybe the Columbia River."
