(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, December 23, 2012 ) Alden, New York -- An Ohio measure would allow visitors to leave guns in vehicles parked at the state Capitol. The state’s Senate recently approved an amendment to a bill that would revise Ohio’s laws for concealed weapons. The measure will need to pass the state House before it is sent to the governor for final approval. Last year, Ohio lawmakers approved a law that allowed people to bring firearms into bars as long as they do not drink and have a permit for a concealed weapon. The current bill would allow people to keep guns in their vehicles in garages near the Capitol, which holds office for the governor and many legislators. The sponsor of the amendment said it was mostly for “convenience’s sake.” Sen. Larry Obhof, a Medina Republican, told The Associated Press that many senators from his party are gun owners who hunt and use shooting ranges. Guns would not be allowed into the Statehouse or other buildings owned by the state. The State Highway Patrol is responsible for the Capitol’s security. “We will continue to make sure that we’re providing a safe and secure environment,” Lt. Anne Ralston told The AP. The measure faces opposition from the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police. The group argued against an earlier version of the bill that would have undermined gun bans by colleges and universities. The wording of that version of the amendment would have allowed students to have a gun in a vehicle while on campus, according to John Gilchrist, a lawyer for the group. That provision did not become part of the measure, which also would streamline reciprocity agreements with other states dealing with weapons permits. The provision has received support from Attorney General Mike DeWine, a Republican. “Expanded reciprocity of these licenses brings tourism dollars from hunting and outdoor sports particularly in Ohio,” he wrote.
