(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, November 21, 2012 ) New York, NY -- For the five-year period ending in 2011, Texas led the nation in Thanksgiving cooking-related fire claims, according to a report released by the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. Monday. During those five years, Texas filed 19 claims over the Thanksgiving holiday period, State Farm said. Other states reporting a high number of claims include Illinois and New York, which each had 18 claims, and Ohio and Florida, which registered 13 claims each. The majority of those claims were related accidents stemming from deep frying turkeys. Data for the number of claims filed each year was not available. In a telephone interview, Mark Hanna, a spokesman at the Insurance Council of Texas, said, “Frying the turkeys seems to be kind of a fad that took off here 10 years ago or so. More and more people have tried it instead of just sticking it in the oven, maybe found it was more exciting to cook it outside.” According to State Farm’s data, there are twice as many cooking-related claims are filed Thanksgiving-related fires than any other day in November. “It’s a very, very easy time to get distracted,” State Farm spokeswoman Heather Paul said. “It just takes a second for you to turn your back on it to have a fire be able to get out of control.” State Farm, which is based in Bloomington, Ill., showed that Thanksgiving claims nationwide were cut by nearly half this year. The total was from 66 in 2010 to 36 in 2011. A safety video featuring well-known actor William Shatner that State Farm released in 2011 is given credit for helping reduce the number of turkey fryer fire-related claims. Shatner himself has been burned using a turkey fryer. “People need to remember that hot oil and turkey can be a dangerous combination,” Shatner said. “I love to fry turkey and have been doing it for years, but I am not immune to frying accidents.” The National Fire Protection Association reports that U.S. fire departments respond to more than 1,000 fires involving a deep fryer every year, resulting in approximately $15 million in property damage.
