(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, November 21, 2012 ) New York, NY -- Families and businesses that had flood insurance are expected to reap the highest compensation in the wake of the damage that Hurricane Sandy caused in the Northeast. Those who had flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program are guaranteed to be compensated for their losses. “It will be essential,” New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said. “Without flood insurance, a lot of these families will not be able to do the rebuilding they need to do.” According to federal officials, it is still too early to know how many buildings either damaged or destroyed by the hurricane and the resultant flood waters were covered by flood insurance. Carter Langston, a spokesperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said “It’s going to take about 60 days before we get a solid picture on what the claims picture will look like for FEMA. New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, speaking to reporters recently, said that those who pay flood insurance have a binding legal commitment from the government to pay. “That’s going to happen,” Schumer said. “We’re going to have to come up with the dollars for that.” Schumer noted that as many as 100,000 homes may be uninhabitable, the equivalent of 300,000 people. “The size of a major American city,” Schumer said. Businesses and homeowners affected by the storm without flood insurance are able to apply for emergency housing, federal disaster assistance, and low-interest loans. Other claims besides flooding can be filed with homeowners’ and businesses’ insurance companies, such as wind damage. Any claims for flood damage must also be filed with the claimant’s insurance company as well in order to protect against double payments for the same loss. New York State has issued more than 9,000 temporary licenses to out-of-state insurance adjusters in order to deal with the increase in claims. Because of the number of storms in the area in recent years, such as Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, the number of New York residents participating in the federal flood insurance program rose by 3.3% or 168,905 policies during the 12-month period that ended in August. Flood insurance covers many different aspects, including building and foundations, electrical, plumbing and heating systems, appliances, and certain floor coverings. About United States Adjusters:
