(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, November 21, 2012 ) New York, NY -- After Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast, it was clear that money was an issue. With thousands of people suffering property damage, insurance agencies have been swamped like never before with claims. Due to the excessive influx, many people have struggled financially and want answers.
Pat Groover, a resident of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, said that she called her insurance company the day after the storm and have not heard from them since. A tree was torn from the front of her property and proceeded to smash a neighbors house, as well as Groover’s house and car, leaving her with a lot of damage to pay for. Groover said that the tree is still on the car because she does not want to give the insurance company any reason to deny her claim. However, she said that she needs to have it taken care of if she wants to continue her life.
Mary Henley, a resident of Breezy Point beach front property in Queens, said that she has been unable to even talk to her insurance company. She said she has called her agency on multiple occasions and even called the Federal Emergency Management Administration, but still has not received a call back.
Insurance companies say that it could take weeks, even months to field all claims of damage. Due to the thousands of people affected, insurance agencies have hired extra adjusters to help them carry the load, but it is still overwhelming. Unfortunately, this is costing customers money because they cannot, like Groover, get their houses and cars back so they are forced to stay in hotels and eat out every night.
Insurance spokesmen have said that claims are being prioritized by severity and that they are working as fast and as hard as they can to meet the needs of their customers. They admit that due to the sheer number of claims means that not everyone will get what they want when they want it.
