(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, September 20, 2012 ) New York, NY – As the 2012-2013 NBA season looms, the Madison Square Garden is also nearing the completion of Phase II of its three-year major renovation.
Considered as the most comprehensive renovation in all 42 years of the history of the prime New York venue, the three-year, almost $1-billion project is expected to transform Madison Square Garden completely. Phase II, however, focused on the middle level suites and the upper seating bowl. It began right after the New York Rangers were eliminated from the previous NBA season last May 25, with workers rotating on a seven-day, 24-hour schedule. The old upper bowl had to be dismantled and the new one had to be built from scratch.
The changes are ‘dramatic and major’, as described by Hank Ratner, president and CEO of Madison Square Garden Co. Last month, Ratner showed journalists around and gave them a first look at the renovated venue.
Although Phase II is still underway, it is expected to be complete by the time the two teams who play their home games there – the Rangers and the Knicks – will start the 2012-2013 NBA season.
Once the season begins, fans who will watch the games at the Madison Square Garden will find seats that are 10 feet closer to the playing surface. The upper bowl is also 17 degrees steeper, which means fans can finally stop complaining about sight lines as they have done for decades.
The concourse that used to ring the arena and thus obstructed the view of fans seated at the front section of the upper bowl has also been removed.
Phase II also added 58 new suites to the arena, along with their own concourse. A new eighth floor concourse has also been added. The new concourse is similar in design to the one that was added on the sixth floor last year, only much wider. The tenth floor concourse, which is located on top of the upper seating area, has also been improved.
Phase I of the renovation, which focused on the lower bowl, was conducted last summer. Phase III, on the other hand, will be conducted in 2013, just after the upcoming season is finished. Phase III will include the building of two distinctive bridges that will provide a unique seating option to fans, as well as a new lobby/entryway, and a new scoreboard.
The first event at the Madison Square Garden once the Phase II of the renovations is complete is the New York Rangers’ first regular season home game, which will pit them against the Dallas Stars. The highly anticipated return of the league and of the Rangers is made even more exciting by the newly renovated venue.
