(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, September 13, 2012 ) New York, NY – ‘A Christmas Story’, the musical, will grace Broadway in the upcoming holidays to mark the end of the year. The musical, which is adapted from the original 1983 comedy that told the story of Ralphie in the Great Depression, is expected to become a holiday must-see for families in New York and from all over the world.
‘A Christmas Story’ has been a holiday favorite for nearly 30 years now, but its stage musical adaptation only arrived onstage last year. The musical was first launched in a tour back in 2011, when it stopped in Hershey PA, Detroit MI, Raleigh NC, Tampa FL, and Chicago IL.
This year, the musical has found its Broadway home in the Lunt-fontanne Theatre, where the play will be held starting November 5 all through December 30.
The musical’s holiday scoring will be courtesy of composer and lyricist duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The book will be written by Joseph Robinette and will be based on the original writings of Jean Shepherd and the script of the original 1983 film. The stage production will then be directed by Tony Award winner John Rando, known for his work on Urinetown. Warren Carlyle of Chaplin, Follies, and An Evening with Hugh Jackman, will choreograph.
The musical will also feature Walt Spangler scenic design and costumes by Elizabeth Hope Clancy. Lighting will be designed by Howell Binkley, while sound will be designed by Ken Travis. Vocal arrangements will be courtesy of Justin Paul, while music direction and supervision will be from Ian Eisendrath. Wigs will be provided by Tom Watson, and orchestrations will be made by Larry Blank.
The production is made possible by a group of producers including Gerald Goehring, Roy Miller, Michael F. Mitri, Pat Flicker Addiss, Mariano Tolentino, Louise H. Beard, Michael Filerman, Scott Hart, Timothy Laczynski, Bartner/Jenkins Entertainment, Angela Milonas, Bradford W. Smith.
Peter Billingsley, the 12-year-old boy who played the role of Ralphie in the 1983 movie version, is also one of the show’s producers.
With the permission of Warner Bros., the musical will bring 12-year-old Ralphie’s story to life. Ralphie’s story is made poignant and dramatic by the Great Depression, during which it was set, but the story and the dialogues make it a comic favorite among all ages. In order to get a BB gun as a present for Christmas, Ralphie had to go on a quest marked with all sorts of challenges.
