(NewYork.CityRegions.Com, August 01, 2012 ) New York, NY - “If you go back and look at the 10 years that I’ve been either a defensive coordinator or head coach, I think overall in that period I’ve ranked third in the league and never finished worse than sixth in defense,” he said. This comment has sparked controversy among football fans supporting other teams, with many of them now challenging the Jets to finish sixth or better this season. On the contrary, it has sparked excitement among Jets fans, especially now that Coach Ryan has cornerback Darelle Revis back on the field.
Darelle Revis reported some tightness in his right hamstring last Saturday and was forced to sit out team drills last Sunday. It was a grim moment for the team and for Jets fans seeing Revis on the sidelines without his helmet on. Just the previous Monday, however, the cornerback was seen fully participating during practice. He worked with the first-team defense during the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.
But while Ryan seems protective and confident over his cornerback, he is expecting more from Jeremy Kerley. “Jeremy needs to step it up,” the coach said in an interview. “Quite honestly I was a little disappointed in him in the offseason.” Whether Kerley will indeed step up to meet his coach’s expectations this season, fans can only watch and see. Kerley has given a clue, saying “The head coach wants me to step up, I’ll step up.”
While Kerley is facing up to a challenge set by his head coach, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has set a personal challenge. In his fourth year in the league, he wants to jump from being constantly criticized to being champion material in a move reminiscent of the experience of New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. With Manning setting a good example for his fellow New Yorker quarterback, Jets’ Sanchez is feeling hopeful. “You see guys elevate their game in the playoffs. That kind of stuff gets brought to your attention, especially when you have similar career tracks as someone in the league.”
Another member of the New York Jets staff is expecting a lot this season. Special teams coach Mike Westhoff wants this season to be his best, because he is also expecting it to be his last. The coach has decided to end his coaching career after what will be his 30th season in the league. “I’ll be 65 years old, and I’ve had 30 years in the NFL. That’s a long time,” he said. “It’s time for me to get off this train.”
A lot is riding on the New York Jets squad this season, and fans are certainly looking forward to the start of the season come September. The tickets New York Jets fans need are now available at JRTickets.com.
